~More than 200 successful heart surgeries performed last year… target to double in 2018-19~
· Requirement of at least a thousand pediatric heart centers in India.
· Recommended that one infant and newborn heart surgery program with the capability of performing 200-500 operations is required for 5-10 million children all across India.
· Reduction in CHD-related deaths could only be accomplished through right diagnosis & correction in the 1st year of life.
At the inaugural event Ness Wadia, MD, Wadia Group announced the the fifth edition of “Little Hearts Marathon 2018” at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, more than 100 patients with successful surgeries were present to give a ray of hope to children with Congenital Heart diseases awaiting treatment. Kin of the patients awaiting financial support also shared their ordeal.
With fewer centers for pediatric heart programs in the city, a waiting list of more than 500 children with congenital heart diseases deprived of treatment exists in Mumbai city alone. Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children will soon be organizing the fifth edition of the little hearts marathon with the aim to help children suffering from cardiac ailments.
“The treatment of 100,000 babies born each year with major congenital heart disease calls for extraordinary efforts and support. Every life matters and every rupee counts, in ensuring a healthy future of the children. We aim to take the marathon to few more cities next year in the hope that more and more people are aware of the problem and extend their support towards building a healthy nation.” said Mr. Ness Wadia, MD, Wadia Group.
Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO Wadia Hospitals Said “The aim of the Little Hearts Marathon is to ‘Save hearts, Save Lives,’ the funds received last year helped save lives of more than 200 children suffering from complex cardiac diseases. This year, they aim to help more than 500 children from the funds; almost 50 patients are in the fray at Wadia Hospital to receive treatment. The Cardiac Surgery Department within Wadia Hospital was inaugurated in April 2017, till now it has successfully managed to perform 200 surgeries of children who are not financially stable with 100% success rate.”
“As of now it can be estimated that there are less than 50 centers in India with the capability of infant and newborn open-heart surgery and a minimum annual case load of 200 operations. The majority of these are a part of “for-profit institutions” and fewer than 10 of these are in the government sector” added Dr Bodhanwala.
In the last five years, the Little Heart Marathon has played a huge role to seek support, contribute and donate for a noble cause. Their main aim is to create awareness about cardiac surgery programs and hence plans to take it forward to other cities as well and help children from cities other than Mumbai.
“Many children with congenital heart diseases are in the waiting list due to lack of funds. As symptoms for congenital heart diseases begin at 1 or 2 months of age, often the diagnosis of the same is missed; making it the biggest reason for increased mortality and morbidity,” said Dr Bodhanwala, CEO Wadia Hospitals.
“As we enter into the fifth edition of Little Hearts Marathon, we realize that there is an urgent need for each one of us to step forward and contribute towards the cause of Saving Hearts Saving Lives.” added Ness Wadia.
