Medics from Fortis Hospital, Kalyan in association with Rotary Club of Kalyan, host cardiac health camp for Kalyan-Dombivli’kars

~ Health camp conducted for over 300 residents to address heart health issues which is stated to be a great threat if undetected in time ~

When it comes to matters of the heart, most of us take heart health very seriously. However, this is only applicable once we are aware of and comprehend the underlying concerns and conditions. We often chose to neglect the warning signs that our body gives out, unknowingly carrying on with our daily business. To address heart health necessities and the concerns associated with it, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan in association with the Rotary Club of Kalyan organized a cardiac health camp for the residents of the Kalyan-Dombivli area on Sunday, at Nutan Vidyalaya, Kalyan.

In recent months, over 25% of people have been diagnosed with a spike in blood pressure, 20% with diabetes and around 50-60% have been signaled out with cholesterol abnormalities. These co-morbidities are the main causes of heart diseases and often go undetected. According to Dr. Vivek Mahajan, Interventional Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, who led this initiative, said “Over the past three months, there has been a considerable rise in the number of patients coming in with heart ailments, these are from varied age groups, and prompt medical attention was provided. On an average, every month, we see about 50 patients who have suffered a heart attack. These numbers are certainly growing; and we need to sensitize the society about heart health and promotion of regular health check-ups, is the need of the hour”.

A heart attack is usually accompanied with chest pain, breathlessness, fatigue and profuse sweating. Most people do not come with these symptoms, mentioned above however are the same people who are more prone to heart disease. The purpose of the health camp was to educate people about heart health and the need for early detection. Over 300 people between the age group of 35-65yrs participated in the health camp; that was also managed by the President of the Rotary Club of Kalyan, Mr. Yakub Bhetasiwala.

Talking about the initiative, Dr. Vivek Mahajan said, “We come across many people who are unaware of their underlying health conditions; which itself is a big threat”.

Speaking on being associated with the hospital and hosting such events for the community, Mr. Yakub Bhetasiwala, President, Rotary Club of Kalyan, said, “The medical teams at Fortis Hospital, Kalyan helped us engage with the society in a fruitful manner; in a way that we were able to educate, equip and sensitize our fellow Kalyan-Dombivli’kars to take heart health seriously and undergo regular check-ups”.
