~ Family of donor consented to donate their beloved son’s Heart, Kidneys and Liver, marking Mumbai’s successive 70th Heart transplant~
Globally, World Heart Day is observed on the 29th of September, on the eve of this occasion, surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund along with Medical Social Workers, ZTCC-Mumbai, Traffic, Police and Nursing staff enabled yet another life-saving Heart transplant on a 33yr old male recipient. Surgeons breathed a new life into the recipient when the family of a 34yr old male consented to donate his their beloved’s organs on being declared brain dead at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion.
The 34yr old donor was rushed to the government hospital after suffering injuries in a road traffic accident. After making attempts to revive him, doctors at the hospital subsequently pronounced him brain dead. The grieving family was counseled by Medical Social Workers about Organ Donation and without much hesitation, the family jointly consented to donate his Kidneys, Heart and Liver, thereby going on to enrich the lives of at least four critically-ill patients. The surgery marked Mumbai’s 70th heart transplant since August 2015. Another landmark achievement towards the cause of organ donation was set, this being the pilot heart donation at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion.
The donor heart was retrieved by the Organ Retrieval Team from Fortis Hospital, Mulund, which was ferried via a Green Corridor to be implanted into the 33yr old male recipient who was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The patient was recently diagnosed with the disease and had been waitlisted in July 2017. The heart was transferred out of the donor hospital at 01.50PM that travelled via the Eastern Express Highway-Nahur-Mulund, reaching Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 02.06PM covering 20Kms in 16Mins.
Speaking about the surgery, conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “Each donation is a progressive step towards building a healthier nation, each step only made possible with the support of the donor families, who make the brave decision in time of grief. We in indebted to them for joining us in our crusade to save and enrich lives. We hope that these golden examples of selfless contribution to humanity, motivate more such families with brain dead family members, to take the bold step”.
Speaking about this milestone, Dr S. Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The donor family has helped set another milestone for the city of Mumbai, we remain indebted to them. This surgery that marks Mumbai’s 70th Heart Transplant, encourages our medical teams to further the cause by taking Organ Donation to every household”.
