World No Tobacco Day: Why Quit?

While the mass are likely being killed by the use of cigarettes, tobacco use in other forms contributes to worldwide morbidity. This year World No Tobacco Day, marked on the 31st May 2017, encourages people to reduce and eventually quit tobacco in any form. The theme for the day is “Tobacco – a great threat to development,” subtly demonstrating the threats that come along with consumption of tobacco and also its adverse effects to the development of all countries and its citizens.

The most common misconception we’ve observed is about certain tobacco products being safe which encourages people to consume it in some, or the other form. The whole purpose of highlighting this day is to spread awareness and also to make people effortlessly aware of all the harms and health complications occurred due to tobacco chewing or smoking.

As per our research, smoking causes about 1 in every 5 deaths each year. Smoking not just affects the heart; it harms nearly every other organ of the body, mainly – blood vessels, lungs, bones, bladder and digestive organs. Smoking is estimated to cause close to 10% of cardiovascular diseases.The chemicals included in tobacco can harm your blood cells, ultimately harming the structure and functioning of the heart.

Any amount of smoking, even light smoking or for that matter occasional smoking, damages the heart and blood vessels. Not many know, people who smoke are actually also causing harm to people living with you as the smoke that comes out is inhaled by people around you too. People who’re diabetic, pregnant or the ones who consume birth control pills are prone to greater risks towards heart diseases.

Some of the ways in which smoking affects

  • Increases risk of stroke by almost three times
  • Arterial diseases
  • Weakening of artery wall and increasing possibility of its rupturing by 6-7 times.
  • Damages heart tissues
  • Raises blood pressure
  • Lowers good cholesterol

Second hand smoking

Secondhand smoke – commonly known as environmental tobacco smoke – is a grouping of the smoke that comes from burning cigarette and the smoke that’s exhaled by the smoker, which spreads out to the adjacent space. Second hand smoke is equally toxic since the chemicals inhaled by the smokers consist of nicotine, formaldehyde, cyanide and lot of cancer causing substances. We often come across this query if smelling the smoke odour would cause us cancer? However, the reality is such that any particles or leftovers on the surfaces or clothes is dangerous and can cause health problems.

Water pipes are growing in attractiveness, and more needs to be learned about them so that we can be aware of their effects, curtail their spread, and help it’s consumers quit. In comparison to a single cigarette which is completed in about 5 minutes,a single water pipe use episode usually lasts for about 1 hour. Despite their sweet aroma, water pipes are also hazardous to your health. Here are some of the side effects:

  • Oral Cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Pancreatic and Bladder cancer
  • Asthma
  • Gum disease, bad breath and tooth loss
