Star Health and Allied Insurance Co on Saturday launched a health insurance policy to cover the needs of children with autism, the first such initiative by a private insurer in India.
The only other scheme in India that caters to the needs of the differently abled is the Central government’s Nirmaya insurance scheme to cover the medical needs of persons with autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities.
Star Health, which recently crossed Rs 2,000 crore in gross written premium for 2015-16 and registered growth rate of more than 36% for the year, launched the scheme by insuring 241 differently abled children from Chennai NGO Sankalp. The children’s medical needs will be covered by Star health up to a sum of Rs 1 lakh for one year.
Star Health, which has more than 69 lakh customers, said that children with autism suffer seizures, soft tissue damage, bone injuries, muscle spasms and many infectious diseases. “So for children with special needs, we have designed this product to help them during medical emergencies,” said V Jagannathan, CMD, Star Health and Allied Insurance.
